The fair one

well, we are talking of rivers, of course.

Specifically, the Gori Ganga. So called, one presumes for the whiteness of her turbulent waters.

The Gori Ganga is one of India's last remaining pristine rivers- that is, a river that flows in an unobstructed manner in a catchment with relatively low levels of anthropogenic interference.

How long will this river be able to flow unbridled? Considering that the Government of India is focusing on 'maximising' hydropower generation in the Himalayan states, it cannot be very long before a dam project is planned here too.

And that would truly be a shame. Because a pristine river is far more valuable than the few MW of power that a dam would generate. A river that flows unobstructed, in a wild catchment, is a valuable genepool ,a refuge for wildlife, and our aesthetic heritage.

You know this, and we know this. Our government does not. yet.

PSI is working on collecting information to prove the viability of preserving such pristine rivers, and lobbying for effective legislation to make this possible. We'll let you know how things are proceeding.
